How to Recover Video From a Corrupted SD Card

First, the one rule that matters: stop using the card. Do not record to it, do not format it, do not let the camera repair it. Everything else can be worked around. Data written over your footage cannot.

Recovering video from a corrupted card is really two separate jobs, and most guides only cover the first one. Job one is getting the data off the card. Job two is turning that data back into files that actually play. Plenty of people finish job one, end up with a folder of files that no player will open, and assume the recovery failed.

It usually has not. This guide covers both halves.

Before you start: work from a copy, not the card

This is the step most people skip and the one that protects you from making things worse.

Rather than running recovery tools against the card directly, copy the whole card — every byte, including the parts that look empty — into a single image file on your computer. Then run everything against that image. If a tool misbehaves, you make another copy of the image and start again. The card itself is never touched twice.

Free tools that do this:

  • Windows: HDD Raw Copy Tool, or Win32 Disk Imager
  • Mac and Linux: the built-in dd command
sudo dd if=/dev/disk2 of=~/card-backup.img bs=1m

Check the device name carefully before you run that. Pointing it at the wrong disk is the one way this step can go badly.

Step by step

  1. Try a different card reader first. Readers fail more often than cards. If a different reader or a different computer mounts the card normally, copy everything off immediately and you are done.
  2. Make the image. As above. Store it on a drive with plenty of free space — the image will be the full size of the card, empty space included.
  3. Run recovery software against the image. PhotoRec is free, open source, and runs everywhere. Recuva and Disk Drill are friendlier to use and have free tiers that let you see what is recoverable before paying.
  4. Recover to a different drive. Never write recovered files back onto the card or the image you are reading from.
  5. Test what came back. Open the recovered files in VLC. VLC is far more forgiving than Windows Media Player, QuickTime or Photos, so it is the fairest test of whether a file is genuinely broken.

Why video is so much harder to recover than photos

People are often surprised that their photos all came back perfectly and their videos did not. There is a good reason for that.

A photo is small and is written to the card in one continuous block. Recovery software finds the start of it, reads to the end, and it is done — an intact JPEG.

A video is very large, so the camera splits it across whatever free space it can find. The pieces are not in order and there is nothing inside them saying which piece follows which. On top of that, the index that ties them together is written at the very end of recording — which means it is the first thing you lose if the camera is interrupted.

So recovery software gets the raw material back but cannot assemble it. That is why you end up with the right number of gigabytes and nothing that plays.

When files come back but will not play

This is the point where free tools stop being useful, and it is worth knowing what is actually left to do.

Rebuilding a video file by hand means opening it in a hex editor, reading its real byte structure, and reconstructing the missing index from the frame boundaries in the video data itself. No reference file from the original camera is needed, which is the main limitation of automated repair tools.

In practice that covers:

  • Rebuilding a missing or damaged index so a player can read the file again
  • Finding exactly where a recording was cut off and closing the file cleanly at that point
  • Putting fragmented pieces back into the correct order
  • Handling formats that consumer tools do not recognise
  • Saving partial results — recovering most of a clip rather than reporting failure

It is slower and costs more than running a tool. It is also what is left once the tools have run out, and it recovers a real number of files that software has already declared unrecoverable.

Recovered files that won't play? Send them over

What we do not do: physically damaged cards. If a card is cracked, bent, water damaged, or no computer detects it at all, that needs a data recovery lab with specialist hardware — a different trade, and we would only waste your time. Our work begins once the data is off the card.

Frequently asked questions

Is free SD card recovery software good enough for video?

For finding the data, yes. PhotoRec is free and finds as much as most paid tools. Where free and paid tools are equally weak is rebuilding video files so they actually play. Large video files are usually split across the card, and stitching those pieces back in the right order is the hard part.

Why are my recovered videos the right size but they will not play?

The recovery got the video data but not the index that tells a player how to read it. Cameras write that index last, so it is the first thing lost when a recording is interrupted. The footage is usually still inside the file and the structure can be rebuilt by hand.

Why did recovery give me hundreds of small clips instead of my videos?

The software found fragments of video scattered across the card and saved each one separately because it could not tell which pieces belong together. Reassembling them into the original recordings has to be done by reading the data and working out the correct order.

Should I recover to the same card?

Never. Writing recovered files back onto the card you are recovering from will overwrite the very data you are trying to save. Always recover to a different drive, and ideally work from a full image of the card rather than the card itself.

How much video can realistically be recovered?

It depends entirely on what happened. If the card was only logically damaged and nothing was written over it, recovery rates are high. If footage was recorded over the top, that part is gone permanently. Partial recovery is common and often still worth having.

Do you recover data from physically damaged cards?

No. If a card is cracked, bent, water damaged or not detected by any computer, that needs a data recovery lab with specialist hardware. Our work starts once the data is off the card: if the recovered files will not open or play, that is what we repair.

Stopping it happening again

  • Format cards in the camera that uses them, before each shoot
  • Never pull a card or battery while the record light is on
  • Eject properly before removing a card from a computer
  • Copy footage off the same day and keep a second copy elsewhere
  • Buy cards from sellers you trust — counterfeit cards are a common cause of sudden failures
  • Retire cards after a couple of years of regular use, and immediately if they start glitching
